An Important Player at the Players

Every year for 35 years, The Players Championship has descended upon Ponte Vedra, FL, and just like its host city, the tournament has grown tremendously over that time. It’s known among the players as the 5th major; the deepest field in professional golf today. And with past winners like Jack Nicklaus, Fred Couples, Greg Norman, David Duval, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods, to name a few, it’s no wonder the event also has soared in popularity among golf fans.

Tens of thousands of spectators make it out each year to see the greatest players in the world take on the most famous (or perhaps infamous) hole in golf, the 17th, the island green at TPC Sawgrass. On any other course, a 137 yard Par 3 hole would have these golf greats licking their chops. But surround that same hole with water, a little Florida wind and thousands of energetic fans and it takes on an entirely different persona. Past Championships have been won and given away on that notorious island green, and it will likely be a factor again this windy spring.

The tournament buzz is already mounting, and several questions will likely bring out an immense crowd, despite the economic climate. Will Tiger Woods be there? Will Phil follow up his Masters victory with another Mother’s Day win for wife Amy? Will Tim McGraw follow up his Military Appreciation Day performance with an ace on the 17th? (Hey, it could happen…) These questions and many more will be answered in a few weeks, when yet another Player’s Championship arrives at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra, FL.
